FORESTRY SERVICES

Noyo Forestry offers forestry services for private landowners, commercial timberlands, and public agencies throughout Mendocino County. As a Licensed Timber Operator and Tree Service Contractor, we’re equipped to handle everything from road brushing and biomass reduction to logging operations and grant-funded fuel work. All projects follow Forest Practice Rules (FPR), Public Resources Code (PRC) standards, and Best Management Practices (BMPs).

ACCESS MAINTENANCE & fuel breaks

Noyo Forestry provides vegetation management and access maintenance along roadways, access routes, and rural infrastructure to maintain safe travel corridors and reduce wildfire risk. Our work supports shaded fuel break implementation, roadside fuel reduction, and long-term vegetation management for private landowners, community organizations, and forest management objectives.

Fuel-reduction treatments typically include removal of ground vegetation, limbing to reduce vertical fuel ladders, and selective thinning of smaller diameter trees to improve canopy spacing while maintaining overall forest structure. These treatments improve access reliability, enhance wildfire resilience, and support ongoing property and forest stewardship goals.

Work is completed using a combination of mechanized equipment and hand crews. Excavators equipped with mastication heads are used to treat lighter vegetation in place, while excavators with grapples are utilized to process and feed material into our tracked chipper when handling higher volumes of vegetation. Hand crews utilize chainsaws and polesaws for selective thinning and limbing, and perform hand chipping where appropriate for biomass reduction and site cleanup.

TIMBER OPERATIONS

We support full-scale timber harvest plans and conduct smaller operations such as timber harvest exemptions, including:

  • 0–150 and 150-300 Foot Fire Safe Clearances, for fire hazard reduction and fuel management
  • Less Than Three Acre Conversions for timber-to-non-timber land use changes, such as clearing forested lands into a building site

Our crews, including sawyers and equipment operators, handle felling, log decking, and biomass reduction. We also maintain roads necessary for safe and effective timber operations. Using equipment such as our CAT 309C excavators, we perform:

  • Road brushing, either by mastication (which mulches vegetation in place) or bucket brushing (faster through dense brush and small trees but requires sidecasting or piling debris)
  • Slash treatment, using mechanical methods in lieu of burning — including chipping and broadcasting on-site, chipping and piling for later use or disposal, chipping and hauling off-site, or mastication to treat and mulch slash in place
  • Culvert installation, repair, and maintenance to manage seasonal water flow and protect road integrity
  • Watercourse crossings, including installation and removal of temporary crossings
  • Bridge redecking and structural repairs to restore safety and load-bearing capacity
  • Road winterization, creating waterbars to redirect water off of roadways
  • Storm-related response, such as restoring road access by clearing storm blowdowns, culvert failures, and washouts
  • Erosion control, using straw mulch, slash packing, and rock armoring to protect drainage features and prevent sediment delivery into watercourses

FOREST HEALTH IMPROVEMENT

Noyo Forestry is committed to enhancing the long-term health and vitality of forests through comprehensive management practices. Our forest health improvement services focus on restoring ecosystems, promoting biodiversity, and reducing wildfire risk. We employ a combination of mechanical and manual techniques tailored to the unique needs of each property, from dense timberlands to overgrown woodlands.

Our services include:

  • Tree Limbing & Pruning: We selectively limb trees to reduce ladder fuels, improve canopy spacing, and increase sunlight penetration. This encourages healthier growth, enhances forest resilience, and reduces wildfire risk by breaking the vertical fuel continuity.
  • Understory & Brush Removal: Using mastication and hand cutting, we remove dense brush and competing understory vegetation, allowing for better growth of mature trees. This work also promotes increased air circulation and moisture retention, supporting the overall forest health.
  • Removal of Dead, Dying, or Diseased Trees: We remove hazardous trees that pose a threat to safety, forest health, or adjacent properties. By clearing out these trees, we help prevent the spread of diseases, pests, and other issues that can impact the entire forest ecosystem.
  • Tree Spacing & Thinning: We create additional spacing between trees to improve forest structure, enhance biodiversity, and reduce competition for resources. This also helps trees grow more vigorously, which can increase overall timber quality and forest resilience.
  • Biomass Chipping & Material Broadcast: We chip biomass and spread the material on-site to aid in soil enrichment, prevent erosion, and support natural regeneration. This process contributes to maintaining a healthy forest floor while reducing the risk of excessive fuel build-up.

By implementing these strategies, we help landowners maintain healthy forests that are more resilient to pests, diseases, and wildfires, while promoting biodiversity and long-term ecological health.

TRANSPORT

Transport services are offered under our forestry division to support equipment mobilization and material delivery. With three Peterbilt 567 tractors and a range of heavy-duty trailers, we provide:

Equipment Hauling

  • Cozad 16-Tire Lowbed Trailer – 19-foot deck with expanding axles and outriggers for wide or overweight loads; ideal for excavators, heel boom loaders, processors, dozers, and other heavy machinery.
  • Interstate 24-Foot Tilt Trailer – used for compact and mid-sized equipment up to 30,000 lbs, such as telehandlers, loaders and smaller excavators; ideal for tight access jobsites.

Material Hauling

  • Reliance End Dump Trailers – 28 ft and 26 ft lengths used for hauling rock, aggregate, fill, stumps, slash, and wood chips; commonly used for road maintenance, erosion control, and biomass removal projects
  • Western 45-Foot Flatbed Trailer – used for hauling lumber, K-rail, culverts, and other construction or forestry materials; excellent for long or palletized loads.
